About Dr. Eric P. Kindwall

Dr. Eric P. Kindwall is oftentimes endearingly referred to as the “Grandfather of Hyperbaric Medicine”. He began his career as a US Navy Submarine Medical Officer and then transitioned to civilian practice and clinical hyperbaric medicine as the first Medical Director of Hyperbaric Medicine at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI. Dr. Kindwall created worldwide recognition of the St. Luke’s hyperbaric program and especially the two multiplace chambers still housed in the basement of St. Luke’s, nicknamed “Bonnie” and “Clyde”. During his many years of practice, Dr. Kindwall devoted himself to research, publication and education, and his considerable contributions to the field of hyperbaric medicine are legendary. He tirelessly taught subsequent generations of hyperbaric physicians, and widely promoted the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the medical and lay public communities. His Hyperbaric Medicine Procedures manual became the de facto textbook of Hyperbaric Medicine long before his actual textbook, Hyperbaric Medicine Practice (now in its third edition), became what is now the only serious contender in the field, consolidating much of the world’s literature into a practical reference. Dr. Kindwall developed the country's first physician hyperbaric education program. In addition to the course offered at St. Luke's Medical Center, he has taught courses throughout the United States and the world. His educational efforts have trained several thousand individuals. Dr. Kindwall was the founding chairman of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Association and served as the President of the organization, and currently serves as the Executive Director of the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine.
